Ready for your G1 test? Once you turn 16, you can head to a Drive Test location to take the Ontario G1 license written knowledge test. It consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, split into two parts: 20 about road signs and 20 about rules of the road. To pass, you need to get at least 16 questions right in each section.

In addition to the written test, there’s a vision test. You also need to pay a $158.25 (may vary) package fee covering the knowledge test, eventual G2 driver’s test, and a five-year license. If you have to retake the written test, it’s an extra $15.75 (may vary) The G1 driver’s test is based on the 2024 Ontario Driver’s Handbook. Ontario follows a graduated driver’s license (GDL) program, taking about two years to complete.

Once you pass the written test at Drive Test, you must hold your G1 license for one year (or 8 months with driver training) before taking your first drive test for a G2 license. During the G1 period, you can practice driving under the supervision of a fully licensed driver. Our G1 practice tests use the same scoring system as Drive Test centers, ensuring no surprises. Users have found our questions almost identical to the real ones.

For immigrants such as international students or those with driving experience from another country, obtaining a driver’s license in Ontario may have different requirements. If you have experience from your home country, you’ll need to provide a driver’s license and an abstract. In this case, you can skip the waiting period and G2 test. After passing your G1 test, you can book your G road test the next day without paying additional G2 fees. The fees for G1 are $106, (may vary) and for the G license, it’s $95 (may vary).
